The former FBI informant who was investigated for false allegations against US President Joe Biden and his son Hunter has now pleaded guilty. According to court documents released Thursday, the defense and prosecution have agreed to a deal in the trial in federal court in California in which 44-year-old Russian Alexander Smirnov would plead guilty to false statements and tax evasion.
Under the agreement, the man, who has dual Israeli and American citizenship, faces a prison sentence of four to six years; the sentence will be announced next year. He was arrested at Las Vegas airport in February while returning from a trip abroad.
Bribes from Ukrainian gas company?
According to the FBI indictment, Smirnov told lies about alleged bribes Hunter Biden and his father received from the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Accordingly, Smirnov was provided with materials for his tall tales by employees of the Russian secret service.
He alleged, among other things, that Burisma paid Joe and Hunter Biden several million dollars each to be protected from prosecution. Hunter Biden previously served on the board of directors of Burisma and Biden served as vice president under Barack Obama until 2017.
Based on Smirnov’s statements, Republicans unsuccessfully tried to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Biden for corruption. According to her report, the statements proved that the Bidens were involved in criminal activity. Donald Trump, who won the presidential election on November 5, has repeatedly called Biden corrupt and said he would appoint a special prosecutor against him after taking office on January 20.
Hunter Biden receives pardon from his father
Hunter Biden faced long prison sentences in two other cases, but the outgoing president recently pardoned him. The president’s 54-year-old son was found guilty in June of lying about his drug use while buying a gun and thereby committing a crime. In September, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion in another case.
