On the road in a storm – cycling couple nearly killed by tree

Date:

On Sunday, heavy rainfall caused – as reported – numerous fire brigade operations in Tyrol. In Söll (Kufstein district) a German couple had all their guardian angels with them. The emergency services were also deployed elsewhere; in total more than 200 times.

The heavy and sometimes torrential rainfall late on Sunday afternoon resulted in over 200 local fire brigades in Tyrol. In parts of the country, GeoSphere Austria has even issued the second highest warning level.

A German couple on holiday had a terrible escape that evening. They were riding a tandem on a village road when a tree suddenly fell on the road during the heavy storm and landed on their bicycles. The two were able to jump off in time and fortunately remained unharmed. The fire brigade removed the tree.

hotspot in the Schwaz district
The district of Schwaz was particularly affected. Numerous cellars were flooded, trees fell and mudflows blocked roads. In Vomp, for example, large quantities of water flowed through the area and the sewage system could no longer swallow it. In Fügen, the fire brigade was busy removing trees from Hochfügener Straße. The colleagues from Tux had their hands full controlling the masses of water that overflowed the riverbeds.

Debris thundered onto Wattentalstrasse
The community of Wattenberg was also affected. There too, debris and mud thundered onto the Wattentalstrasse, forcing the road to remain closed for the time being.

After a lightning strike at around 18:10, the sirens also sounded in Niederau. A power cable was torn from the pole and the overvoltage was transferred to a rod. The cable caught fire, but the Floriani disciples were able to extinguish it quickly. Fortunately, no one was injured.
