An alcoholic 38-year-old crashed his car into the Vöckla. He had lost control of the vehicle. The driver was able to save himself and the car alerted the emergency services via an e-call system. Because it was not clear whether more people were involved, a search followed.
While driving across the Vöcklamarkt, a man from Frankenmarkt lost control of his car on Monday evening due to excessive speed, his severe intoxication – a breathalyzer test subsequently showed 1.76 per mille – and poor visibility. He drove straight ahead in a left-hand bend across a meadow, broke through the Vöckla dike, felled a 30-centimetre-diameter maple tree and fell into the river.
The driver got out of the tailgate
While the Skoda was drifting about 50 meters downstream, the driver managed to free himself via the tailgate. Due to the water pressure, the car doors could no longer be opened. The car sank in the Vöckla, which was about two meters deep, but was able to raise the alarm itself via an e-call system.
Search by police and fire brigade
The 38-year-old driver, seriously hypothermic, ran towards Frankenmarkt. The rescue team met him at the top of the Trenauer Mühle and were able to provide him with first aid. Whether more people were involved in the accident was not yet known at that time. The police and around 40 emergency services from the Frankenmarkt, Vöcklamarkt and Windling-Mühlberg fire brigade therefore started a search with two thermal imaging drones. After half an hour, the all-clear was given.
Driving license revoked
The sunken Skoda was rescued from the river by a towing company during a difficult salvage operation. His driver’s license was temporarily suspended.
