Kuleba in China – Beijing wants to end bloodshed in Ukraine

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is traveling to China on Tuesday. The visit is supposed to be about finally ending the terrible war in the country invaded by Russia.

“The main topic of the talks will be the search for ways to stop Russian aggression, as well as the possible role of China in achieving a lasting and just peace,” the ministry in Kiev said on Monday, adding that the visit is expected to last until Thursday.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed the meeting and said the initiative for the meeting came from Beijing.

Beijing wants to mediate neutrally
China, which has a close political and economic partnership with Russia, presents itself as a neutral party in the war in Ukraine. However, Kiev’s Western allies accuse Beijing of not condemning Russia’s war of aggression and of continuing to supply Russia with goods that play a role in both. can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

The Kremlin reacted cautiously to the announcement from Kiev. “For us, our relations with China are the most important,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed. He emphasized the strategic partnership between the two states.

Xi wants direct peace talks
Two weeks ago, during a visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Chinese head of state Xi Jinping called for direct peace negotiations between Kiev and Moscow and a ceasefire from the international community. China did not participate in the Ukrainian peace conference in Switzerland.

As early as February 2023, China published a twelve-point plan to end the war in Ukraine. However, Western states had complained that the paper allowed Russia to keep large parts of occupied Ukrainian territory under control.
