“The Habsburgs” – The most powerful dynasty that ever ruled

Date:

‘The Habsburgs’, our major digital history project, tells 700 years of history in ten gripping episodes – dusted off and in completely new images.

In the Middle Ages, a compromise candidate wins the battle for the most important crown in the Christian West and establishes the most successful ‘family business’ in history. Pirates of the Caribbean hunt the legendary Spanish silver fleets, which ensured the dynasty’s leadership in the Roman-German imperial elections. A pregnant twenty-three-year-old defends her heritage against Europe’s most powerful men and makes a brilliant new start. An ‘exchange of crowns’ leads to a new Austrian imperial title – which is lost at the end of the First World War.

In ten episodes, ‘The Habsburgs’ highlights the fascinating saga of the most powerful dynasty that ever ruled; from its beginnings in the Middle Ages through the heights of imperial power to its demise and descendants in the 21st century. A real and even more dramatic Austrian and European ‘Game of Thrones’ that has shaped our world today.

But we also look behind the scenes and shed light on the life, daily life and splendor of the Habsburgs: how rich was the dynasty? What were your biggest scandals? Which emperor scribbled indecent things on important cabinet files?

Innovative multi-channel format
“The Habsburgs” is not a conventional documentary series, but a completely new multi-channel format of the “Krone” in the history genre: presented by the historian Dr. Martina Winkelhofer combines well-founded knowledge transfer and memorable digital visualizations. The renowned Austrian digital artist Sini Tripkovic creates impressive animations for ‘The Habsburgs’ that make complex processes crystal clear – often with humor and a wink.

“The Habsburgs” was filmed in iconic locations such as Vienna’s Hofburg, the Capuchin Crypt and the Treasury. It is a journey through place and time, to the most important locations in our history – real and virtual-immersive.

“The Habsburgs” starts online at krone.at on December 15, 2024. Episode 1: The Rise of the Habsburgs
