Styria (89) injured – car stuck on railway tracks – train cannot stop

Date:

Horror accident on Friday evening at a former ÖBB stop in Spielberg (Styria): an 89-year-old accidentally drove his vehicle onto the platform and the front protruded onto the track. An oncoming passenger train rammed the car. The driver, who was standing next to the car, was injured.

The accident happened shortly before 7 p.m. It is unclear why the 89-year-old Styrian ended up on the platform. The stop is abandoned. A viaduct goes over the tracks. Maybe he wanted to turn around.

The driver wanted to stop the train
What is certain is that the driver could no longer drive his car forward or backward. The front of his vehicle jutted onto the track from the edge of the platform. Apparently because an ÖBB passenger train was approaching, the Styrian got out and possibly tried to stop the train with hand signals.

But it was too late for that. The oncoming train hit the car with full force. “As a result of the collision, the engine block was thrown approximately 30 meters into an adjacent meadow,” said Fabian Dorner, operations manager of the fire brigade. The driver was very lucky on Friday the 13th. “If he had been in the car, he probably wouldn’t be alive,” the fire brigade said.

Train passengers housed in the armory
While some firefighters took care of the recovery of the completely destroyed vehicle, the 24 train passengers were evacuated from the regional train by their comrades and taken to the Spielberg armory for further care. According to police, both the passengers and the train driver escaped in horror.

The driver of the accident was taken to hospital by the Red Cross with injuries of an unknown nature. The route was closed to all train traffic during the cleaning and recovery work. The work lasted until late in the evening.
