A man shot dead five people on Saturday, four of them near a migrant camp near Dunkirk, in northern France, and another in a nearby town, authorities said.

According to official sources, a person has surrendered to the Ghyvelde Gendarmerie police station claiming to be the alleged perpetrator of the fatal shooting, whose motivation is unknown.

The Public Prosecution Service has opened an investigation into the events.

According to initial indications, two immigrants and two security officers were shot in Loon-Plage – near the Mardyck immigrant camp – and a man in his 30s was shot dead by the alleged perpetrator in the town of Wormhout.

Loon-Plage, a small town a few miles from Dunkirk, is one of the busiest border crossings for immigrants and asylum seekers seeking to enter Britain clandestinely, risking their lives in the English Channel.
