Markus Gell runs a world-class lithography workshop in Rankweil in Vorarlberg. The most famous painters and graphic artists of our time come and go here. The writer Robert Schneider visited him.
Who could have suspected such a thing? Behind the completely normal facade of a typical single-family home in Rankweil lies a lithography studio that is regularly visited by the greatest and best-known painters and graphic artists of our time. The eccentric Markus Lüpertz, one of the most important visual artists of our time, was already sitting here at the kitchen table. Hermann Nitsch was there, as was artist icon Chiharu Shiota from Japan, who took part in countless exhibitions from Tokyo to Paris to the Venice Biennale with her breathtaking installations of thousands of wool threads (cobweb installations). Shiota has woven blood-red threads here in an old printing press. A fascinating work of art with which she thanked her for her stay in Rankweil during the Corona period.
