Johann Ortlieb was definitely not a nice person! Contemporary history records him as block and cell leader of the Nazi regime from 1933 to 1936. Subsequently, the Hitler henchman and mayor of Groß Gerungs rose up the career ladder in various NSDAP positions to district chief of staff.
Sentenced to heavy imprisonment
His loyalty to the criminal regime culminated on December 10, 1947 at the Donnerskirchen trial in a sentence of two years in prison and the loss of all property. But that is exactly why he did NOT remain in the memory of the people of “Germs” – as the place in Waldviertler is popularly called.
Alley as ‘historical burden’
For the municipal elections, the citizens’ list around Markus Kienast makes the ‘historical burden’ of an alley named after Ortlieb a problem. “Ortlieb does not deserve such a tribute,” Kienast complained.
