In Greece, the number of unaccompanied refugee children has doubled

Date:

The number of unaccompanied refugee children arriving in Greece doubled in 2024, taking into account that migration to Hellas reached its highest level in five years.

The NGOs ‘Save the Children’ and ‘Greek Refugee Council’ reported this on Tuesday in Athens. They also outlined and criticized the harsh social realities that boys and girls face in refugee shelters.

Inhumane conditions
Some live in inhumane conditions, including poor quality food and even cockroaches in the buildings, according to the organization Save the Children. In Greece, the number of migrants and refugees rose by 35 percent to 57,363 in the first eleven months of 2024.

According to UNHCR data, this is the highest number since 2019. More than 13,000 children arrived by sea, an increase of 50 percent compared to the previous year. The number of unaccompanied children has doubled to around 3,000, compared to 1,490 in 2023.
