To draw attention to the situation in northeastern Syria, demonstrators briefly occupied the ZDF main studio in Berlin-Mitte on Wednesday.
The aim was to discuss with ZDF the demands for recognition of Rojava’s democratic self-government by the public media, the youth organization Young Struggle said on the online platform Instagram. Autonomous self-government is in real danger.
Police confirmed the incident. A spokeswoman said twelve people entered the ZDF building and unfurled banners. Because they refused to leave the house, emergency services were alerted. These registered the personal data of 13 people. No further operational details were initially given.
Editors are open to concerns
According to the activists, the demonstrators’ refusal to voluntarily hand over their personal data was “responded to with painkillers, identity checks and expulsions”. The ZDF editorial team, on the other hand, was open to the topic of Rojava, the youth organization said on Instagram. It is unclear whether a criminal complaint has been filed for violation.
