Climate protection group Last Generation wants to rebrand and realign itself. “We are leaving the name behind us. We are no longer the last generation,” German department spokeswoman Carla Hinrichs said on Wednesday.
The group will not disband and there will still be protests. But something new will emerge from the structures of the last generation, Hinrichs told “Spiegel”.
Controversial actions
The group had drawn attention to climate damage with controversial actions such as color attacks, road blockades and disrupting airport operations. The activists were subsequently imposed several fines and suspended sentences.
“No longer our focus”
Blockades for cars, airports and roads are currently “no longer our focus,” Hinrichs said. The mantra used to be, “If you don’t make the effort, you won’t be heard,” but that will now change. “We no longer have to fight our way to every dinner table.”
New name still open
Instead, according to Hinrichs, the group wants to “build connections” under the new name and “prepare for the coming crises.” It is about “mutual security, social justice and cohesion,” Hinrichs said. Moreover, the activists’ goal is “to bring thousands of people onto the streets at critical moments to stand up for a peaceful, democratic system.” Hinrichs did not say what the new name of the movement would be. There are ‘concrete considerations about this’.
Hinrichs said of Last Generation’s actions to date: “We have done what we believe in. I can look at myself in the mirror and I would always defend what we did.”
