Two dead, six injured – that is the sad outcome of the recent school shooting in the US. So unusual for this one so far – if only one thing had been different: the shooter was a woman. Krone+ on the rare phenomenon of female shooters and the possible reasons why women take up arms.
“Today is a sad, sad day,” said Shorn Barnes, police chief of Madison, the capital of the US state of Wisconsin, which has a population of about 280,000. Only recently, a 15-year-old girl had opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School, a private institution that educates about 400 students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The teenager shot a classmate and a teacher and injured six other people before killing herself with a gun.
In the US, fatal shootings are a part of everyday life. According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, there were 322 shootings at U.S. schools this year alone. That’s the second-highest number since 1966, surpassed only by last year’s total of 349 shootings, according to the database. What is special, however, is that this time a woman was in charge.
