A week ago, two Russian tankers carrying 9,000 tons of fuel oil went into distress during a storm and capsized in the Black Sea. According to media reports, the spilled oil is now causing dolphins to die.
Eleven dead dolphins have been found so far in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar, Russia’s state news agency Ria Novosti reported, citing Delfa environmental center director Tatyana Belej.
Two oil tankers capsized during rough seas
On December 15, two oil tankers capsized in heavy seas in the Kerch Strait, between the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. Oil is still leaking from the wreckage and washing up on beaches for dozens of miles. In addition to the Krasnodar region, the Crimean Peninsula, which has been annexed by Russia since 2014, is also affected.
Thousands of volunteers clean beaches
According to media reports, 8,000 volunteers are now helping to clean the beach (see video above). Hundreds of birds covered in oil have been rescued, regional leaders said. However, the number of animals that died as a result of the oil spill was not stated.
