The US government is concerned that a weakened Iran could decide to build nuclear bombs. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said recent developments have limited the Islamic Republic’s conventional military capabilities.
“It’s no wonder there are voices saying, ‘Hey, maybe we should have a nuclear weapon … maybe we should rethink our nuclear doctrine,'” Sullivan told CNN on Sunday.
There is a risk that Iran will keep its promise not to build nuclear weapons. He is talking about it with President Donald Trump’s new administration, Sullivan said. The US has also held discussions with Israel on this matter.
Iran has increased uranium production
There was initially no statement from Iran. The Islamic Republic describes its nuclear program as peaceful, but has increased uranium production in recent years.
Iran and its allies have suffered setbacks in recent months, most notably with Israeli attacks on the radical Islamist militias Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as on targets in Iran itself.
The overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has been granted asylum in Russia, is also likely to impact the government in Tehran, experts say.
