All ten people on board were killed when a small plane crashed in the southern Brazilian city of Gramado. The victims were a businessman from São Paulo, who was behind the wheel, and nine of his relatives.
Rio Grande do Sul state governor Eduardo Leite said at a news conference on Sunday that seventeen people were injured on the ground, two of them seriously.
According to a report from the “G1” portal, the crashing machine hit a residential building, a furniture store, an inn and the chimney of another building in the small town. The furniture store’s Instagram account states that no one was in the store at the time of the accident. “We are all doing well, apart from the huge shock.”
Crashed a few minutes after takeoff
According to Leite, the plane crashed a few minutes after taking off from the airport in the town of Canela in the morning. Their destination was Jundiaí in the state of São Paulo, more than 1,000 kilometers north. The cause is under investigation, the governor said. The weather was not ideal.
Located in the Serra Gaucha Mountains, Gramado is popular with Brazilian tourists who enjoy the cool weather, hiking and traditional architecture. The city is a popular place for Christmas holidays.
