The diplomatic mission of Georgia is located in a “normal” residential building without special security standards in the center of Vienna. Tenants complain about vandalism, disruption of the peace and fear the worst.
Things have become particularly heated in the Caucasus country since the parliamentary elections in Georgia. The pro-EU and pro-Russia camps are incompatible. The long winds of the conflict extend to Vienna and frighten the residents of Rudolfsplatz in the city center. The Georgian embassy and consulate are housed here in a “normal” residential building.
There are always loud demonstrations in front of the apartment complex, vandalism in the stairwell, graffiti and nightly chimes, report those affected who wish to remain anonymous for security reasons.
You should know: there is no military police guarding the building. For data protection reasons, cameras are not allowed in the hallways. No grille protects the windows.
Apparently the protection against fire is not even particularly good. “We have wooden frame walls here. “I’m really afraid of an arson,” says a “Krone” reader. District and municipal politicians are aware of the situation, but can do little. The attempt to get the diplomatic mission out of the house through legal action failed in court.
There are reports of damage to property (doors, locks, walls). However, identifying the perpetrators is a difficult undertaking. Those affected will likely be left with the costs for the most part.
