After the terrible rampage of a man of Arab descent at a German Christmas market, the “Krone” asked around among the Christmas stalls in the country. The tenor: deep concern, but also a great sense of security.
Just an hour after the devastating attack in Magdeburg, there was great excitement at the Christkindl market on Enkplatz in Vienna-Simmering: a drunken Finn was rummaging in the crowd with a gun and an observant market vendor sounded the alarm. Just moments later, a police patrol already patrolling the grounds pulled the 39-year-old out of traffic. The murder weapon turned out to be a gas pistol, but fortunately the man did not pose an actual threat.
There is a good atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle
Although the shooting in Magdeburg was on everyone’s lips yesterday, there was a great atmosphere at the local Christmas markets. A survey by “Krone” confirms the impression:
Safety measures remain high
The incident in Simmering makes visible the increased security measures around Austrian Christmas villages. As reported, police presence was increased at the start of Advent – as we know, the terror alert level is at level 4 out of 5 since the Hamas attack on Israel more than a year ago. However, there are currently no concrete cases of threat, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
