“It’s a tragedy. There are 46 people who had families and were looking for a better life,” Nirenberg said at a news conference, adding that the crime is under investigation by federal authorities.
The mayor has linked the event to the human trafficking networks operating on the border, adding that he hopes those “responsible for putting these people into humane conditions will be convicted”. At this time, the Mexican Consulate in San Antonio has said it will provide support to all people from Mexico who are victims of what happened, if any.
