This comes amid indirect negotiations between the government of Israel and the Palestinian organization Hamas over the release of hostages, through an agreement allowing prisoner exchanges and a ceasefire.
At least nine people were killed and several were injured in two drone strikes by the Israeli army in the Al-Mawasi humanitarian area near Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, according to local and health media reports this Monday.
The Israeli army claims it carried out the attack on the camp ‘based on intelligence’, targeting a Hamas fighter in Al-Mawasi, who had already been designated by Israel as a safe humanitarian zone.
Before the attack, the information continues, “numerous measures were taken to limit the risk of harm to civilians, including the use of precision munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence information.”
The camp covers an area of about 41 square kilometers and lacks critical infrastructure and services, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
