A man set fire to a sleeping woman on the New York subway. She died on the spot. The perpetrator, Sebastian Zapeta-Calil from Guatemala, is said to have seen the woman burned.
According to police, the woman was traveling on an F train in the Brooklyn borough when the crime occurred. She probably fell asleep while driving. Sebastian Zapeta-Calil is said to have approached the sleeping woman around 7:30 am and set her clothes on fire with a lighter. The woman was engulfed in flames within seconds, reports Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch (43) of the New York Police Department.
Emergency services quickly extinguished the flames, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A police spokesperson told CNN that a suspicious man was arrested just a few hours later.
The alleged perpetrator is said to be from Guatemala and entered the US illegally a few years ago. Most recently, he lived in a homeless facility for people with addiction problems.
No further details about the victim were immediately available, but during the winter many homeless people use the subway system to escape the cold. Temperatures in New York are currently around freezing, reaching minus ten degrees at night.
