Testing in mid-2025 – horror intersection will not be defused for a while

Date:

After the traffic negotiations in Teesdorf in the Baden district, one thing is clear: the long-requested traffic light solution for the intersection where a ten-year-old was recently hit by a car is off the table for the time being. Alternatives are now being looked at. But that takes time…

The residents of Teesdorf had great expectations, but after the traffic negotiations at the ‘horror intersection’ there was disillusionment: a traffic light solution demanded by many residents is, at least for the time being, off the table. “The construction of a traffic light cannot be seen as an optimal solution,” explains district governor Verena Sonnleitner.

Readers of “Krone” know the background of the problem in the 2,000-resident community in the Baden district. In the recent past, serious accidents have repeatedly occurred at the intersection where two national highways meet, mainly involving pedestrians. Most recently, a ten-year-old was hit by a car, and a few weeks earlier a woman was hit by a bus – both on Schutzweg.

Censuses, surveys, analyses
Therefore, special attention was paid to these two accidents during the pre-traffic hearing surveys. “A so-called junction current count was carried out, the willingness to stop in front of the protective routes was recorded and a detailed analysis of the accident was carried out,” Sonnleitner explains.

But what happens next? What can be described as the greatest success is that, as a direct measure, the security routes are more recognizable and visibility at the intersection is improved. “This involves removing vegetation, improving signage and installing floor markings,” says the district governor.

All variants have been checked
However, real structural measures would not be implemented for the time being. After the rejection of the traffic light solution, it is now the turn of a civil engineering firm. It must investigate all possible variants in close cooperation with the Lower Austrian Road Authority and the municipality. These mainly included the construction of a roundabout and, curiously enough, also a traffic light system. The first results will be available in the summer of 2025.

This obviously takes too long for the residents. “What else needs to be done?” they wonder.
