WHO takes stock: Significantly fewer corona deaths

Date:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of corona deaths has fallen steadily recently, about five years after the emergence of the coronavirus. While in June 2021 one in four people who were in hospital due to Corona died, this is now about one in 25.

The UN agency generally underwent a five-year review.

  • Accordingly, nearly 777 million cases of the disease have been counted worldwide to date.
  • Seven million people in a total of 234 countries have died.
  • The highlights of the pandemic were the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. In the period from mid-October to mid-November 2024, 77 countries reported cases of Corona.

Long Covid remains a major problem
A major problem remains the long Covid symptoms that can follow an illness. According to a current overview, six percent of corona cases resulted in Long Covid. According to the WHO, corona vaccinations appear to be effective protection in reducing the risk of consequential damage.

The virus circulates without apparent seasonality and continues to sometimes cause serious illness, the report said. Due to the greatly reduced testing, the WHO can no longer monitor the spread, severity and possible changes of the virus.
