Date:

In a super-professional world like elite football, there is also room for solidarity initiatives like the one taking place today. Alex Iwobi, Fulham’s Nigerian international.

Born in Lagos (Nigeria) but living in east London since childhood, Iwobi opened a small makeshift food store there called ‘AleXpress’ to help the poorest families on Christmas eve and “celebrate it with dignity”. He personally gives out free food these days, including turkey, to low-income residents of the community.

Iwobi He lives in Canning Town, a working class district from the English capital, where he returned in 2023 after signing for Fulham from Everton. He debuted as a professional in 2015 in the ranks of Arsenalwhere the lower categories he trained, and was the ‘gunner’ until 2019 when he moved to Goodison Park.

“Every Christmas we try to give back to people what they give us. We opened this grocery store to bring food to families who couldn’t afford Christmas shopping. If I can help them have a good Christmas, why not?” said Iwobi, 28 years old, in a report about his initiative prepared by BBC Sport Africa.

Iwobi is honest about his roots: “I just see my parents, who always share. These are my models. “I told myself that when I am in a position like now, I will always do my best to help people.” A wonderful gesture with one goal: enjoy a magical Christmas day.
