Berri-Otxoak, Kakitzak and AHT Gelditu believe that the 2025 accounts do not take into account the context of inflation, economic and social-health crisis.
On Thursday, the groups Berri-Otxoak, Kakitzak and AHT Gelditu organized a striking protest in front of the Basque government delegation in Bilbao. With diapers as their only item of clothing and under the motto ‘This is how austerity leaves us’, they have denounced the social cuts planned in the Basque budgets for 2025 and criticized what they consider a ‘waste’ in projects such as the university. speed train (TAV) and military expenditure.
During the meeting, activists displayed posters expressing their rejection of the reduction in funds allocated to health, housing, education and social benefits. According to the demonstrators, the budgets do not respond to the economic crisis, inflation and social problems facing a third of the Basque population who are struggling to make ends meet.
According to these groups, 219,000 people in the Basque Autonomous Community are in a situation of poverty or at risk of exclusion, 62% of whom are women. In addition, they warn of the increase in child poverty, which reaches 11.7% of children under the age of 14 and mainly affects female-headed households.
In their complaint they emphasize that, despite cuts in resources to guarantee basic rights, such as decent housing or essential services, 67 million euros are allocated to the TAV, 18 million to the Southern Railway Bypass and 100 million in subsidies to the Basque Military industry. . This expenditure, they argue, does not meet the real needs of citizens.
Protesters are demanding a change in budget priorities, with greater investment in public services and support for families in vulnerable situations.
