Damaged cable – Russian “shadow fleet” under suspicion

Date:

Finnish authorities have detained an oil tanker after damage to an undersea electricity cable between Finland and Estonia. The ship sails under the flag of the Cook Islands. However, it is now associated with the Russian ‘shadow fleet’.

These are transporters that Russia should unofficially use to deliver its oil to other countries in order to avoid sanctions. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on the X platform that he had been informed about the case by the police. The risks posed by ships in the Russian ‘shadow fleet’ must be prevented.

EstLink2’s power connection to Estonia was interrupted on Wednesday. Finnish authorities said they had taken command of the ship. According to them, problems also arise with multiple communication cables. This has no consequences for the consumer. This was announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Estonia. Reports spread on social media that a Chinese cargo ship had passed through the area at the same time the power cable problems began (see post above).

Repairs will likely take months
According to researchers, the damage to the cable could have been caused by an anchor. The repairs will take several months, says Finnish operator Fingrid. The electricity supply in Finland is still stable, but the situation could worsen if, for example, there is less wind.
