This year, Austrian households collected over a million tons of packaging and waste paper. The EU’s recycling targets have been exceeded. For paper packaging in this country this is 80 percent, for metal packaging 75 percent and for glass 86 percent.
However, for plastic packaging this is only a quarter. The EU recycling target for packaging waste is 65 percent by 2025 and 70 percent by 2030. “Anyone who collects packaging separately in the right bin makes a valuable contribution to conserving resources and protecting the climate,” said ARA board spokesperson Harald (Altstoff Recycling Austria). Hauke.
According to ARA forecasts, Austrians have collected a total of 537,000 tons of paper, 253,800 tons of glass and 230,300 tons of light and metal packaging separately this year.
This is how much waste the Austrians collected in 2024.
From January 2025, packaging such as detergent containers, yoghurt cups, chips or cans will be collected together in the yellow bin or yellow bag throughout Austria. Plastic beverage bottles and beverage cans are excluded; a disposable deposit applies. The joint collection is already taking place in Vienna, Lower Austria, Carinthia and Salzburg.
The ARA assumes that the change will lead to significantly more plastic packaging being collected next year.
