Finland retains the tanker that allegedly caused damage to the submarine cable between that country and Estonia

Date:

The ship was transferred from Porkkala to Porvoo this Saturday to facilitate the open investigation, which is suspected to have been an act of sabotage. The ship could belong to what is known as the Russian ‘shadow fleet’.

Finnish authorities have arrested the tanker ‘Eagle S’who could be responsible for the damage suffered by the EstLink 2 submarine cablean electricity cable connecting Finland with Estonia.

According to Finnish public television YLE, the ship was transferred from Porkkala to Porvoo last Saturday to facilitate the open investigation.

Helsinki Police Inspector Heikki Porola confirmed the tanker’s arrival in Porvoo around 4 p.m., as planned.

“The ship’s captain and crew remained on board and active during the transfer. Once at anchor, we will resume the investigation and focus on whether this ship caused the damage,” Porola told YLE.

Porola has emphasized that the rapid intervention of the Finnish authorities during the incident, which took place on Christmas Day, prevented greater damage to the Estlink 1 cable or the Balticconnector gas pipeline.

The Estlink 2 cable between Estonia and Finland was interrupted on Wednesday in what Finnish authorities suspect act of sabotage. Following the incident, they detained the Cook Islands-flagged oil tanker ‘Eagle S’ whose anchor is believed to have damaged the cable.

According to the EU, the ship could belong to what is known as Russian ‘shadow fleet’: tankers and other cargo ships that are used unofficially by Russia, for example to circumvent sanctions on oil transport.

Secretary General of NATO Mark Ruttehas announced that the Atlantic Alliance will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea after the war errors recorded in EstLink2
