Do measures help? – This is what the teacher shortage really looks like

To save the system from collapse, the Ministry of Education launched ‘Class Job’, the largest education initiative in the Second Republic. A first balance sheet is now available.

More than 120,000 teachers teach a million students every day in 5,700 educational institutions. Due to limited human resources, every year at the start of the school period in Austria, there was great doubt whether all lessons could continue. The Ministry of Education wanted to take countermeasures this year with the ‘Class Job’ initiative.

17 percent more new students
A first conclusion at the end of the year: the campaigns have an impact. In the 2023/24 academic year, 17 percent more new students were inspired to become teachers. The training was reformed. In the future there will be 6 semesters for the bachelor’s degree and 4 semesters for the master’s degree.

Offer particularly successful for career changers
Career changers in particular have come into the public eye. There are academics from all kinds of professions, some even retired, who have decided to pass on their knowledge and experiences to young people.

This year, 6,597 new teachers were hired across Austria
This year, 684 career changers were hired. Applicants go through a strict selection process, which only 50 percent pass. There were 6,597 new teachers across Austria this year.
