The majority of Austrians (40 percent) like and enjoy watching fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve. About a third like fireworks, but find the explosion of fireworks terrible.
And 17 percent feel bothered by the noise, according to a survey among 1,000 people commissioned by Allianz and published on Sunday. Multiple answers were possible for all questions.
Amazing: Only nine percent like to set off fireworks themselves; these are mainly men and the age group from 14 to 19 years. About a quarter believe that only professional pyrotechnicians should do this.
Fireworks also carry dangers
And 15 percent of respondents claim to have experienced damage from fireworks – to themselves or in the form of property damage. 3.6 percent were slightly injured and three percent were injured by a person from the same household. The same number suffered property damage, two percent had their car damaged and another two percent had their home or apartment damaged.
Conversely, seven percent have already injured themselves or someone else or destroyed something.
Yes to the ban out of respect for animals
For 18 percent, the risk of injury is a reason to argue for a general fireworks ban. 31 percent would abolish it out of respect for pets and wildlife, a quarter because of the impact on the environment and 18 percent because of the noise.
Older people (50 years and older) in particular are opposed to rockets and fireworks.
