There was minor traffic chaos Friday in Compton, a suburb of the city of Los Angeles in the US state of California. The reason: A city councilor gave away $5,000 worth of gas at a gas station.
For a few lucky drivers who got to the gas station on time, Councilor Andre Spicer gave fuel for up to $50 (just under $48). An offer that of course many did not want to miss, given the recent sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices. A small traffic jam around the gas station in Compton was the logical consequence.
Councilor Spicer himself sat on a horse painted in rainbow colors, spoke to citizens and advertised himself. In California, drivers currently pay the equivalent of around $1.65 per liter of petrol – which is still considerably cheaper than, say, Austria, where two or more euros per liter has to be bombed.
Traffic chaos during a similar action in Chicago
In mid-March, a similar move sparked traffic chaos in the American metropolis of Chicago after millionaire businessman and former mayoral candidate Willie Wilson announced he would be providing free gasoline worth a total of $200,000 (about $181 million).
