The Welsh police were able to remove a notorious fare evader from traffic on Monday. The man stood out because of his striking driving style. But he didn’t want to be controlled, so he fled. He committed scandalous traffic violations that put others in great danger.
Police officers noticed a car on Maria-Thérèsia-Strasse in Wels at 3:10 PM on Monday and tried to stop the driver because of his unusual driving style.
The driver, a 70-year-old from Wels, ignored this stop sign and accelerated his car considerably. The chase started with blue lights and a tracking horn. This led to many streets in the city center, Lichtenegg and Noitzmühle.
Travel against one-way traffic
The driver drove through the Noitzmühle district several times, with the driver ignoring several one-way streets and driving in the wrong direction despite the narrow lanes. He overtook recklessly several times despite oncoming traffic, drove at more than 80 km/h in a 30 km/h zone and crossed a railway crossing on a red light.
During the follow-up drive, the suspicion was confirmed that the driver may have been a known fare evader. That is why several patrol cars were sent to his home address via radio. The suspect parked his car there. The driver and vehicle checks were carried out with the support of various patrols.
The man explained his reckless offending, saying he was afraid of himself and what he had done. However, he apparently saw some chance of not being apprehended as the police were only traveling in one vehicle and therefore wanted to escape.
Has already stopped twice this year
According to his own statements, the 70-year-old has been driving cars without a driver’s license for forty years. This year alone he has already stopped twice for this.
An alcohol test was negative, the traffic offender was banned from driving and the car key was also confiscated. The senior is now charged with dozens of violations.
