Balance on New Year’s Eve – “hits” with missiles to the face and hedge burning

Date:

As beautiful as fireworks can be, they also pose a lot of danger if you are not extremely careful. Serious accidents often happen, especially when there is an apparent misfire. Two Carinthians had to experience this firsthand on New Year’s Eve.

From a safe distance, fireworks are a beautiful spectacle, not only on New Year’s Eve. But when igniting you always place yourself in a certain danger zone, especially if it does not work immediately due to cold or moisture. When the bell rings, several rockets are launched throughout the country – and two Carinthians were unlucky…

Embarrassing accidents with rockets
In the municipality of Steinfeld, a 35-year-old had set up a category F2 fireworks battery in his garden. “Because it did not start immediately, the 35-year-old again walked to the battery and bent over it. “Suddenly the battery ignited,” police reported. “The man suffered unspecified facial injuries.” After first aid, he was immediately rescued and taken to hospital in Spittal.

A 20-year-old from the municipality of Wernberg had a similar experience: he set off a similar battery of fireworks in a field. “A bullet hit him right in the face. The 20-year-old suffered injuries of an undetermined nature and was taken to Klagenfurt hospital after first aid from the emergency services,” police said. In both cases no foul play could be established.

Hedge fire caused by pyrotechnics
Less tragic was a fireworks show in an allotment garden near St. Veit. Shortly after midnight, a hedge was set on fire by a pyrotechnic device – the flames raged for more than six meters. But the fire brigades of St. Donat and St. Veit an der Glan were able to quickly control and extinguish the fire.
