The Styrian police went out no fewer than 765 times on New Year’s Eve – a significant increase compared to the previous year. Nine police officers were injured, seven of them in Leoben, where they were pelted with fireworks by boys. There is a suspect in custody.
The incident happened in the center of Leoben: around midnight, boys threw fireworks at seven police officers. They had to be treated in the Leoben LKH on suspicion of explosion trauma, and one police officer even suffered cuts to his leg from splinters. A suspect is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.
Also in Graz, two police officers were slightly injured when they were thrown by a bottle. Furthermore, New Year’s Eve went well in the capital – despite around 50,000 visitors in the city center. During checks, police officers seized a total of nine kilos of fireworks. Throughout Styria, there were approximately 180 official acts with reports and executive mandates because the ban on pyrotechnics was violated on site.
Exploding bottle injures 23-year-old
A dramatic accident took place in Aigen im Ennstal (Liezen district): a 23-year-old put a firecracker in a glass bottle. It exploded, the young man was injured in the neck and was taken to the hospital in Schladming.
There was even one fatality on New Year’s Eve: a 79-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car in the Weiz district; Traffic checks led to twenty reports of drunk driving in Styria, and 16 drivers even had to surrender their driving license because they had more than 0.8 per mille.
Major fires in St. Georgen, Bad Gleichenberg and Bruck
The fire brigade was also called in: in St. Georgen am Kreischberg the house of a family with four children burned down completely, and in Bad Gleichenberg a farm was destroyed by flames.
Major operation also in Bruck an der Mur: an island with waste in the courtyard of an apartment building was on fire. Due to the strong heat and smoke, all residents had to be taken to safety; four people were taken to LKH Bruck with suspected mild smoke poisoning.
Nearly 2,000 emergency calls to the police
In total, the Styrian police were active 765 times around the turn of the year; the year before there were 674 operations. The main reason was the use of pyrotechnics. Within 24 hours, 1,987 emergency calls were received by the state control center.
