Some people in the Danube City and Floridsdorf may have been happy with the snow that fell from the high fog on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. However, meteorologists must be disappointed: the flakes are industrial snow. We have to wait for ‘natural’ snow.
On New Year’s Eve, many Viennese probably reacted with relative surprise to the photos that friends from the Danube City and Floridsdorf sent and posted. While the sidewalks in the other districts were dry, Kagran, Stadlau and Gerasdorf (Lower Austria) seemed covered in sugar and looked like a winter wonderland.
Simmering or Lobau oil port as the culprit
However, the origin of the snow is not natural, as Ubimet weather expert Konstantin Brandes revealed to ‘Krone’. The few centimeters are industrial snow that has fallen from the high fog. The origin is unclear, but could probably be somewhere in Simmering or near the Lobau oil depot.
Two cars recovered by firefighters
As the professional fire brigade knows, the very slippery snow on New Year’s Eve also caused some problems. In the Danube city, according to spokesman Lukas Schauer, a car left the road and slid over an embankment. The driver was not injured. Another vehicle was unable to make any progress on an ascending snow-covered road and had to be towed with a cable winch.
Plus double-digit temperatures possible instead of snowflakes
Unfortunately, according to Brandes, we will probably have to make do without further snowfall for the time being. After the ice days – the high fog is expected to clear during the day tomorrow – a cold front will arrive late in the evening with rain and slightly higher temperatures and a maximum of a few snowflakes. Even on Sunday there will probably only be sleet falling from the sky. From Epiphany onwards, temperatures can even reach double digits again. However, the models still disagree.
