A two-year-old boy was found dead in England next to his father, who had previously died of a heart attack. Skegness council in eastern England said the boy died because there was no one to care for him after the 60-year-old man’s death. The family was known to the authorities.
The police watchdog IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) announced an investigation on Thursday into whether officers missed opportunities to intervene in the case. The municipality had also previously started an investigation. A social worker has twice reported the matter to the police after the door was not opened for her on January 2 and 4 despite an appointment with her father.
Father died of a heart attack
When no one responded on January 9, the landlady let the woman into the house and found the bodies of the 60-year-old and his young son Bronson Battersby. The two were home alone when their father died of a heart attack, Heather Sandy, director of family services, told BBC Radio 4. “That meant no one could care for Bronson, and that’s why unfortunately Bronson died too,” Sandy said.
IOPC regional head Derrick Campbell said the shocking circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two victims were shocking. “It is appropriate that we conduct an independent investigation to examine the police response to any welfare concerns previously raised.”
“Truly heartbreaking tragedy”
Police Secretary Chris Philp told the BBC that the investigation must get to the bottom of “this truly heartbreaking tragedy”. “We all want quick answers to what happened,” Philp said.
