Thousands of missions – not for the faint of heart: this is how New Year’s Eve went

Date:

Burns, amputations and the like: New Year’s Eve in Austria was turbulent in many places. Despite numerous warnings about the dangers of using fireworks, some partygoers still couldn’t keep their hands off the fireworks, especially young people. Rescue services, police and fire brigades were in almost constant action. Only in the south, in Burgenland, it remained quiet.

A new year has begun. But in addition to the very special atmosphere that a New Year’s Eve brings, the many interests should not be ignored. Within just 24 hours, thousands of emergency calls were received across the country, often due to accidents involving fireworks. Two people were seriously injured in Upper Austria and Vienna. But various fire operations also kept the helpers on their toes. Krone.at provides an overview of the most disastrous operations in the federal states:

Both had to be taken to the trauma room. Other people were transported to clinics with minor injuries. Overall it was a quieter night compared to previous years.

There were fatal consequences Vorarlberg in Bregenz by experimenting three children or young people between the ages of eleven and fourteen with homemade fireworks. One suddenly exploded in the 14-year-old’s hand, partially amputating several fingers. The hand was operated on at Feldkirch Hospital. The explosion hit another boy with two pieces of shrapnel in his eyes and punctured his eardrum.

Hit in the face by splinters
Also inside Tyrol Injuries occurred after a 16-year-old exploded on a rain barrel in Oberland Imst. The ten-year-old brother was hit in the face by splinters and taken to the clinic in Innsbruck. In Carinthia Two men suffered undetermined facial injuries while handling fireworks.

A 20-year-old from the Villach-Land district also wanted to set off a category F2 fireworks battery on a field in the municipality of Wernberg shortly after midnight. The bullet hit the man directly in the face. A 13-year-old boy from the Villach-Land district was also seriously injured in the hand by a homemade firework on New Year’s Eve.

From a police perspective, New Year’s celebrations in Burgenland were “quiet.” There were no injuries following fireworks accidents. However, in Oberdorf in the Oberwart district, a sawmill completely went up in flames on New Year’s Eve.

Several police officers were injured
In Styria, the police carried out a total of 765 missions on New Year’s Eve. That was almost 100 missions more than a year ago. Several law enforcement officers were injured in the line of duty, seven of them by a firecracker thrown into Leoben.
