Shots fired during protests – Russian politicians criticize partial mobilization

Date:

Civil rights activists say police officers fired warning shots at protesters in the Russian Republic of Dagestan in the Caucasus during a protest against the mobilization of reservists. In the village of Endirey, residents blocked a road to hinder the partial mobilization ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meanwhile, two top figures in the Russian parliament and close allies of President Vladimir Putin are also showing sympathy for the numerous complaints about the campaign to mobilize hundreds of thousands of soldiers.

Videos show police officers pointing guns into the air, after which shots are heard. There is also a dispute between residents and officials. According to Dagestani media, the protest was in response to 110 men from the village who were forced into the war against Ukraine.

Activists speak of ‘ethnic cleansing’
Muslim Dagestan is one of the regions of Russia from which, according to observers, a particularly large number of men are summoned. Activists complain that members of ethnic minorities are particularly hard hit by the mobilization and sometimes even speak of ‘ethnic cleansing’.

Two top representatives of the Russian parliament and close allies of President Vladimir Putin understand the numerous complaints about the campaign to mobilize hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Valentina Matviyenko, chairman of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, referred to reports that men who should not be affected by the recently announced partial mobilization have been summoned.

Should ensure flawless partial mobilization
“Such excesses are absolutely unacceptable. And I think it is absolutely right that they should provoke a sharp response in society,” she wrote on Telegram on Sunday. The regional governors of Russia are responsible for the implementation.

They should ensure that the criteria for partial mobilization were fully and correctly complied with. Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of the lower house, the Duma, in turn stated that if mistakes were made, they should be corrected. “Authorities at all levels must be aware of their responsibilities.”

Given the recent defeats of his army, Kremlin chief Putin ordered on Wednesday that reservists should now also commit themselves to fighting in Ukraine. Since then, many Russians have panicked. The Russian war of aggression has been going on for more than seven months.
