We all have at least one first and one last name. However, few of us know the origins and meaning of the latter. Many people want to learn more about their family name with the help of artificial intelligence. An expert explains why it is not that simple.
For a long time, people could get by with first names – it wasn’t until they started living in larger settlements and smaller towns that there were suddenly multiple people with the same name. The surname had to be added about 1800 to 1900 years ago. This could be chosen based on different criteria, since name researcher Univ.-Prof. Mag. Ernst from the University of Vienna explains: “For example, there were origin names based on the region you came from – such as Prague. Or so-called patronymics, i.e. the name after the father. “Ernst, Werner’s son, became ‘Ernst Werner’.”
