A flightless female rhea died on New Year’s Eve – all as a result of the rocket fire. The sad photo of the dead bird in Styria is one indictment and gives the victims of the fireworks a face.
“They came from all sides, the bird, but also my other animals, such as kangaroos, alpacas and emus, wanted to escape in great panic, but did not know where to go because the bright flashes of light came from everywhere,” said Franz Maurer, owner of the popular ‘Franziskus animal adventure farm’ in Unterlamm in Eastern Styria, sad and shocked.
Partner is now alone
The animal ran into a wall in panic and broke its neck. The female would have been three years old this year and breeding with her mate for the first time. He is all alone now.
And: this is not even the first fatal accident. Last year it was a kangaroo that broke its neck in the same way. Maurer: “That’s incredible. Just because some want to have reckless fun, others suffer and even lose their lives. That’s not okay.”
Mayor Robert Hammer thinks the same way. “Unfortunately, on New Year’s Eve you would have to have a police officer on every corner of the house.” The community leader wants to create even more awareness and reflection: “With the sad photo of the dead bird, this could be more successful…”
