Scope still unclear – hacker attack on Med-Uni: data now on Darknet

Date:

After the hacker attack on the Medical University of Innsbruck in mid-June, data from the university’s servers has apparently been published on the dark web. Analysis and investigation into the extent and nature of the data is ongoing.

Med Uni spokeswoman Barbara Hoffmann-Ammann announced this on Tuesday at the request of APA. However, a large part of the central services could be restored and communication with staff and students will once again be via e-mail and intranet.

New passwords for everyone
The hacker attack, which took place on June 18, resulted in a limitation of IT services. The state of affairs was initially communicated via a specially designed website, only a few days later, on Wednesday, the university homepage was back online. 3400 students and 2200 employees received new passwords.

data protection authority informed
Med-Uni remained cautious about the nature of the cyber-attack. The university has informed the data protection authority and the National Criminal Investigation Department has started their investigation, it was said at a press conference last week.

“As communicated, we fully support the authorities in their investigations and are working with external experts,” said Hoffmann-Ammann. She declined to give more details at this time.

Traces often lead abroad
The National Criminal Investigation Department stated last week that digital investigations “are in principle very complex, complex and time-consuming”. Traces often lead abroad, international legal aid is often necessary. According to the Cybercrime Report of the Federal Criminal Police Office, cybercrime is on the rise: 46,179 cases were reported in 2021, 28.6 percent more than in the previous year.
