On Monday morning, NGOs and students will gather for a demonstration against Herbert Kickl as Chancellor at Ballhausplatz in Vienna. The reason is the planned meeting in the Hofburg between FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. There is a large police presence, including WEGA, on site.
Currently, probably several hundred participants have gathered for the demonstration in front of the Hofburg. “Ballhausplatz is cordoned off with fences, there is a large police presence on site to secure the area,” police spokesman David Pawlik told krone.at.
Spontaneous protest against Herbert Kickl
According to Pawlik, the demo was not registered because it would have required a 48-hour turnaround time. He cannot yet say whether this will lead to a complaint later.
The reason for the demonstration is the meeting between FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, which will take place on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Hofburg. Kickl could be tasked with forming a government.
The Jewish-Austrian Students and Volkshilfe Austria announced a spontaneous protest meeting on Sunday.
“Strong signal against the right”
“We call on all democratic forces to send a strong signal against the planned right-wing government and to join our spontaneous protest,” the Jewish-Austrian students wrote on Platform X on Sunday evening.
The action against the FPÖ leader will not be the only one. The non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Greenpeace, Volkshilfe and SOS Mitmensch also called on Sunday evening for a “demonstration against a right-wing extremist chancellor”. This is scheduled for Thursday, January 9 at 6 p.m. at Ballhausplatz in Vienna.
