Epiphany tragedy – Lower Austria: two deaths in traffic drama in the Waldviertel

A devastating collision took place between Groß Rupprechts and Kurzschwarza in the Waldviertel on Monday morning: two drivers had a fatal accident on the national highway.

According to the first information, two men – one from the Gmünd district and one from the Zwettl district – could only be saved dead by the numerous emergency services. The accident scene was largely cordoned off.

The accident took place around 8:15 a.m. on the B2 between Großrupprechts in Vitis in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district and Kurzschwarza in the Schrems municipality in the Gmünd district. The force of the collision threw both cars off the road and came to rest in a ditch or an adjacent field. The engine block of one vehicle was torn from the vehicle and left on the road.

Three fire brigades, emergency doctors and police on site
The fire brigades of Großrupprechts, Vitis and Heinreichs, as well as the emergency medical teams of Waidhofen an der Thaya and Gmünd, several rescue teams and the police quickly arrived on the scene, according to the Waidhofen an der Thaya fire command. Despite the large number of emergency services, all help for the two drivers came too late and they died at the scene of the accident. The emergency services rescued the drivers from the accident vehicles.

After the police registered the accident, the fire brigade cleared the street and recovered the vehicles involved in the accident. The fire brigade was able to end the operation after three hours. The police are currently investigating the precise circumstances of the accident.
