Normally Bangkok is known for its unrelenting heat, but Thailand’s capital is currently making headlines with some pretty cold temperatures. Meteorologists predict minimum temperatures of 15 degrees during the night and morning hours in the coming days.
This is essentially considered a cold snap in the Southeast Asian metropolis. Even as daily temperatures continue to rise to around 30 degrees, many Thais are out and about in unusual outfits – with thick sweaters, hoodies and wool coats.
Tourists still wear shorts
The tourists were different: many vacationers in Thailand were happy with the freshness of the morning. For her, the values were still high enough for shorts and summer dresses. However, in parts of Northern Thailand in the mountainous regions it was so cold that it was even freezing in some places. A cold air mass over parts of Thailand and the South China Sea was responsible.
Great heat from March
In general, the winter months of December and January are considered the most pleasant in the kingdom. According to experts, the cool temperatures are expected to last for another two weeks. A kind of calm before the storm: from February onwards the values usually rise continuously.
The highest temperatures are reached between March and May. Last year they were particularly high: during a week-long heat wave, authorities asked the population to stay indoors alone if possible. Nevertheless, dozens of people died as a result of the extreme temperatures, which felt like temperatures exceeding 50 degrees.
