Woman raised the alarm – out of desperation? Death journey background

Date:

A tragedy with two fatalities occurred on Epiphany in the Waldviertel (Lower Austria). But the real drama started earlier: the wife of one of the two drivers in the accident warned the police shortly in advance, who arrived immediately.

“Two cars collide head-on on a busy highway at 8:20 a.m. on a public holiday? Hard to believe,” was said several times from the Waldviertel.

A head-on collision claimed two lives
And yet: On Monday morning around 8:20 a.m., a head-on collision took place between Groß Rupprechts and Kurzschwarza in the municipality of Vitis, literally tearing apart two cars and claiming two lives. A 61-year-old from the Zwettl district and a 44-year-old from the Gmünd district were killed after the 61-year-old crashed his car into oncoming traffic, according to police.

“The force of the impact caused both vehicles to leave the road and come to rest in the ditch. Both the 61-year-old and the 44-year-old died of their injuries at the scene of the accident. According to the current state of the investigation, the 61-year-old may have acted with suicidal intentions,” the Lower Austria State Police Directorate said.

Bad harbinger…
Even before the catastrophic accident, tragedy was already on the horizon. Shortly before the collision, the woman alerted the police: her husband had expressed suicidal intentions and had driven away in the car. The police immediately started a search for the 61-year-old. A little later there was news about the horror crash and then the certainty that it was the man we were looking for.

Whether this was actually intentional is currently being investigated by the police. In his home region, a social media post by the sick man a few days earlier caused an uproar: he asked his friends to pray for him because he was in the hospital and feeling miserable.
