Several Upper Austrians are playing an important role in the FPÖ’s push for a new government and are being considered for ministerial positions. Meanwhile, Upper Austrian ÖVP chairman and state governor Thomas Stelzer is ready for talks with the Freedom Party.
Long before the elections for the National Council in the autumn, a list circulated in the FPÖ that also included the names of several Upper Austrians. If the Freedom Party and the ÖVP agree to work together, they could have a shot at taking the highest positions in the federal government. For example, Susanne Fürst from Linz, who is considered a close confidante of party chairman Herbert Kickl, or the Schörfling pharmacist Gerhard Kaniak, who is seen by many as the next Minister of Health.
Hermann Brückl was the best candidate in the elections
Hermann Brückl, who took part in the race as Upper Austria’s top candidate for the FPÖ, would also have a good chance. Freedom Party leaders withheld their statements on Monday. The only general information we could hear from Upper Austrian party leader Manfred Haimbuchner was: “It is completely clear: Herbert Kickl was our top candidate, he is our candidate for chancellor. We won’t talk about other people.”

In the ÖVP Upper Austria itself, people are secretly happy that the ‘red-pink ghost’, as a prominent black man calls the failed negotiations, is over. Governor Thomas Stelzer, who spoke in favor of Christian Stocker as Karl Nehammer’s successor, said: “I was and am against new elections. Because these would paralyze the country.” If the FPÖ invites the ÖVP to talks, his party will be ready, the state leader added.
Will Holzleitner now take over the state SPÖ?
However, the end of the coalition negotiations for the Reds could set things in motion for the state SPÖ. Many comrades would like to see Eva-Maria Holzleitner as a woman at the head of the state party, who could also join the state government as a state councilor instead of the retiring Michael Lindner.
The woman from Wels was unavailable until the end because a position in the federal government was reserved for her. Now the cards are being shuffled again and the office in Upper Austria could be attractive for Holzleitner again.
