A bailiff in England has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for having sex with a prisoner in his cell. After being charged, the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to misconduct in public service in the summer of 2024.
The verdict was announced on Monday by a court in London. The Wandsworth Prison case caused a stir in Britain: a fellow inmate filmed it on his mobile phone and the video subsequently ended up on the internet.
Woman had sex with prisoner several times
According to the BBC, the woman admitted in court that she had sex with the prisoner on other occasions. The video circulating on the Internet therefore did not show an isolated case.
The woman “intentionally and without reasonable excuse or justification, misbehaved in a manner that amounted to an abuse of public trust in the sitting president by engaging in sexual acts with an inmate in a jail cell,” the indictment said last year.
Abuses in the prison have been known since 2023
Last spring, the British Prison Inspectorate sent a letter to the Ministry of Justice urging improvements at Wandsworth prison.
In late July 2023, Wandsworth was given the lowest possible rating in a review and authorities were deeply concerned. During inspections it was repeatedly found that up to 80 percent more prisoners were housed than intended. It was “still one of the most overcrowded prisons in the country, with most prisoners sharing one cell,” the supervisory authority said.
Becker: Difficult hygienic conditions
After his release from prison, former tennis star Boris Becker described difficult sanitary conditions and conflict among prisoners at Wandsworth. He quickly learned that he needed protection and that he had to surround himself with ‘tough guys’. “You fight to survive every day.” A prisoner wanted to blackmail him, said the German who was in prison. Fellow prisoners protected him, the German said.
