About a third of men born in 2005 are above normal weight for the military. 21.4 percent were overweight. This is in line with the increasing trend of previous years. Another 11.2 percent were even overweight, according to figures published by Statistics Austria on Thursday. However, the proportion of smokers fell to 12.9 percent.
Of men born in 1985 – that is, those born 40 years ago – 15.5 percent were overweight and 5.8 percent obese given their status at the time. The average height during the so-called military sampling of the Federal Army increased from 177.8 to 178.8 centimeters in this comparison period. In contrast, the average weight of young men increased from 72.3 to 77.0 kilograms among those born between 1985 and 2005.
Of those born in 2005, 60.5 percent were normal weight and 6.9 percent were underweight according to BMI.
Fewer and fewer smokers
The proportion of smokers among young men is developing positively. This has fallen significantly over the years, from 16.3 to 12.9 percent for those born between 2004 and 2005 alone, giving a non-smoking rate of 87.1 percent. Of those born in 1985, more than half (52.2 percent) had smoked when tested.
The percentage is highest among those born in 2005 without a positive compulsory education certificate; 30.4 percent of them reported smoking. Of those who had completed compulsory education, 18.2 percent smoked at the time of the exam. On the other hand, young men who were still in high school at the time of their positions or who had already completed one with a high school diploma almost never picked up a cigarette. Here it was about three percent, that is, about 97 percent, non-smokers.
Eligibility grades are no longer recorded
Every male Austrian citizen must register from his 17th birthday. The call for the position will take place in the calendar year in which the person turns 18. The recruitment process focuses primarily on health suitability for military service and ends with a decision regarding suitability or unsuitability for basic military service. For the first time, this information from the Ministry of Defense is no longer available to Statistics Austria for those born in 2005.
