After several cows from a farm in the Bregenzerwald had to be killed, more slaughters are now planned.
Following a suspected case of bovine tuberculosis (TB) on a farm in the Bregenzerwald, further slaughter has now been ordered. This was announced by the state veterinarian of Vorarlberg, Norbert Greber. It is hoped that diagnostic killing of additional animals will provide information about the possible chain of infection. In addition, animals that have been in contact with animals on the affected farm must be examined.
Cattle examined on German farm
Abnormalities were found during meat inspection at a slaughterhouse in Germany, which is why the company in Vorarlberg has been closed since December. All cattle in the herd were examined. Because there were a large number of positive and questionable results, ten cows were initially killed. No major changes were said to be noticeable in their organs, and the pathogen was isolated from six of the ten animals. No conclusive findings were currently available for two animals.
More slaughter
That is why the veterinary authority and the federal ministry have ordered the diagnostic killing of additional animals. State Councilor Christian Gantner (ÖVP) emphasized that the highest priority is to protect human and animal health. Therefore, an accurate clarification of the onset of the disease and its course is necessary. The farmer receives compensation payments to at least compensate for material damage.
A possible source of infection is staying on mountain meadows where farm animals can come into contact with red deer.
