On Thursday afternoon, the kitchen of a school in Linz was cooking too hot. The fryer caught fire and everything was quickly filled with smoke. Although the students and teachers responded quickly and correctly, ten teenagers had to be taken to hospital.
It was 12:48 when the fire alarm went off. It automatically sounded the alarm if the heat in the kitchen became too high and the smoke became too thick. An everyday alarm for the Linz fire brigade – but on the way to the HBLA Landwiedstrasse the message came that there was a real fire! “We immediately equipped respiratory protection personnel,” says operations manager Johannes Metzger. The Red Cross was also alerted and deployed with a reinforced team, as there were about 500 students and dozens of teachers at the school.
Kitchen and dining room affected
As rescuers arrived, the young people and teachers responded in an exemplary manner. After the siren signal was automatically activated, the building was evacuated, a fire blanket was thrown over the fryer that had caught fire in the school kitchen and the fire was smothered. “But the smoke was heavy, the kitchen and dining room were affected,” said firefighter Metzger. Because the smoke out happened so quickly, many young people also inhaled smoke. The Red Cross has taken ten teenagers with breathing problems to hospitals as a precaution. Fortunately, there are no reports of serious injuries.
Responded perfectly
“The attendees responded perfectly; when we arrived the fire was out. We searched everything with the thermal imaging camera and ventilated the school. Because everything was so thick with smoke, it took an hour,” says operations manager Johannes Metzger, praising the young people and teachers.
